Georgia Aquarium is dedicated to serving and showing appreciation for military personnel, both active and retired. Beginning Nov. 2, the Aquarium will be hosting the #MyVeteranHero contest presented by The Home Depot. The four-week long contest ending Nov. 30 will be hosted on Facebook and Instagram and will highlight veterans nominated by Georgia Aquarium fans.

The Aquarium is proud to be able to say thank you to the men and women that are currently serving or have served in the military in a variety of ways. The Veterans Immersion Program, developed in 2008, supports wounded veterans and provides a unique form of adjunctive therapy to compliment current rehabilitation and reintegration programs. The program allows participants to swim or dive in the 6.3-million-gallon Ocean Voyager Built by The Home Depot exhibit and relax alongside marine animals such as, whale sharks and manta rays. Over 1,600 military personnel and guests of all abilities with injuries both seen and unseen have been hosted through the Veterans Immersion Program.

Beginning Monday, Nov. 7, Georgia Aquarium will offer a special Military Mondays discount to active and former military members, veterans and their family members. Every Monday through Dec. 26 active and former military members will receive free General Admission courtesy of The Home Depot Foundation, and family members will receive 30 percent off General Admission to the Aquarium. The discount will also be offered on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, and on the day of the 35th Annual Atlanta Veterans Day Parade, Nov. 12.

“We are proud to serve our active and veteran military guests at Georgia Aquarium, and be able to give back to those who have given so much,” said Susan Oglesby, C.T.R.S, director of dive immersion at Georgia Aquarium. “It is an honor to work with our Veterans Immersion Program groups and hear their stories. We have the opportunity to give them a unique experience that will hopefully continue to have a positive impact on their lives when they leave the Aquarium.”

To enter the #MyVeteranHero contest, fans are encouraged to nominate a military veteran in their life by posting a photo of them on Facebook or Instagram with a short caption about why the veteran is their hero. Posts should tag Georgia Aquarium and include the #MyVeteranHero hashtag to be entered. Entries are limited to one per fan.

Selected winners will receive a family 4-pack of Georgia Aquarium General Admission tickets. There will be five weekly winners, with one being a grand prize winner to receive an exclusive Aquarium experience including early access to the Aquarium for four people, a California sea lion meet and greet, Behind the Seas VIP tour, reserved seating in the SunTrust Pier 225: Under the Boardwalk and AT&T Dolphin Celebration presentation, and lunch at Café Aquaria at Georgia Aquarium.
