ATLANTA (Oct. 23, 2015) – Georgia Aquarium has launched new offerings and events to honor the brave men and women, military and veterans, who have served in our military.
Military Mondays, made possible by The Home Depot, salutes active and former military, veterans and their families, by offering free and discounted admission to Georgia Aquarium. Each Monday from October 26 through December 28, Georgia Aquarium will extend free admission to active and former military and veterans and a 30 percent discount for accompanying friends and family. The program offers additional dates on Saturday, Nov. 7 and Wednesday, Nov. 11 in recognition of Veterans Day.
The Aquarium will also help the U.S. Navy kick-off the annual Navy Week with a series of celebrations and commemorative activities on October 26. Georgia Aquarium will serve as the inaugural stop for the Atlanta tour that gives residents a chance to learn about diverse roles available in this division of the U.S. Armed Forces. The celebration will begin with a ceremonial band performance in The Plaza at 10 a.m. and continue throughout the day with the opportunity to participate in STEM-focused activities, watch Navy dive shows, explore dive equipment displays and listen to interviews with crew members from USS Georgia.
Also happening on Navy Day, the Aquarium will have the honor of hosting a reenlistment ceremony through its Dive Immersion Program. Soldiers often chose unique locations to make this occasion memorable and this will mark the second time the Aquarium has hosted such a prestigious event. On October 26, three divers will submerge into Ocean Voyager Built by The Home Depot to reenlist with the United States Navy. Family and friends will gather in The Ocean Voyager gallery to witness the ceremony through the acrylic and hear audio from underwater through the gallery’s sound system.
These events and offerings compliment some of the Georgia Aquarium programs that honor active military and veterans year-round such as the Veteran’s Immersion Program. Established in 2008, this one-of-a-kind program enables participants of all abilities, from quadriplegia or amputations to post traumatic stress or traumatic pain, to swim or dive in the 6.3 million gallon Ocean Voyager Built by The Home Depot.
Since its inception, sponsors have made it possible for more than 1,300 military personnel and guests to experience the healing properties of water and the sheer magnificence of swimming and diving with these incredible animals. Most recently, a group of veterans from Wounded Warrior Project® participated in Journey with Gentle Giants in September.
To redeem the Military Mondays offer, military and veterans must verify status at the Georgia Aquarium ticket window with proper identification. Discounted tickets are also available for purchase year-round through ITT/MWR offices at participating military base ticket offices. Prices may vary.
