ATLANTA (August 20, 2014) – After nearly a month of encouraging readers to choose their favorite aquarium, USA Today has announced that Georgia Aquarium has been voted Best North American Aquarium in the newspaper’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
“Georgia Aquarium is thrilled to be recognized as the Best North American Aquarium,” said David Kimmel, president and COO of Georgia Aquarium. “Thank you to everyone who voted and for continuing to support Georgia Aquarium. Each aquarium on the list is a must-see facility and we are all united in helping to educate millions of guests every year and inspire them to preserve our oceans and the amazing species that live there.”
Georgia Aquarium was one of 20 aquariums nominated for Best Aquarium in North America. The aquariums nominated were chosen with the help of data provided by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, by which Georgia Aquarium is accredited. The data included annual visitor count, square footage, total aquarium gallons, membership numbers, affordability of entrance fees, awards won and commitment to conservation efforts.
Georgia Aquarium features six galleries that hold over 10 million gallons of fresh and salt water. It is home to four whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, and is the only aquarium outside of Asia to house whale sharks. Georgia Aquarium is not only an entertaining and engaging Atlanta attraction for guests of all ages, but is also a leader in aquatic animal conservation and research.
In addition to USA Today’s 10Best recognition, Georgia Aquarium has been described as a must-see attraction in Atlanta by USA Today and was listed as the No. 1 reason in “Why Atlanta Is the Big American City You’ve Been Missing Out On” by The Huffington Post. Georgia Aquarium was also recently awarded the No. 3 Top Aquarium in the World Travelers' Choice award by TripAdvisor. Additionally, Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin from Georgia Aquarium won two 2014 Daytime Emmy Awards in July for Outstanding Travel Program and Outstanding Directing in a Lifestyle/Culinary/Travel Program.
