Imagine a world where our animals were not at risk of being endangered. Unfortunately, that world does not exist due to the threats that some of our species face each and every day. As humans, we put some of these species at further risk by some of our daily activities.

One of these beautiful endangered species is coral reefs. One of the major threats coral faces is due to the type of sunscreen we wear into the ocean. Chemicals in many sunscreens, especially aerosols, can lead to coral bleaching. The ingredient oxybenzone breaks down the coral, causing it to lose its nutrients bleaching it white. Many of us don’t realize the negative impact our actions have on our planet.

You can make a difference by using a coral-safe sunscreen next time you go to the beach. These sunscreens contain ingredients that help with the sustainability of our planet.

Here are some things to look for when shopping for a coral-safe sunscreen:

  • Oxybenzone-free
  • Clear Zinc-free
  • Nano-free
  • Paraben-free

Coral reefs are an integral part of the marine ecosystem, providing homes for thousands of different aquatic species. The large role they play in marine ecology makes degradation of coral reef habitats a pressing issue for our world oceans.

Georgia Aquarium works in partnership with the Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) in the Florida Keys to help replenish coral reef populations and create environmental conditions that will ensure the long-term survival of coral.

Take the pledge with us to do your part and use a coral-safe sunscreen next time you go in the ocean!
